WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY

TOURIST INFORMATION NEWS.

SEPTEMBER 2008.

AN EXCELLENT AUGUST

No-one could argue that the weather was very wonderful in August but the good news is that we had a very busy month on the trains with the 10.40 from Bishops Lydeard and the 16.00 from Minehead proving particularly popular.

PASSENGER FIGURES YEAR TO DATE

At the end of August our overall passenger figure for the year to date stood at 145,631 compared with 155,253 at the same point of 2007.  There has been a noticeable reduction in numbers of main line trains coming on to the line this year and that has not helped but clearly we are not bucking the trend as regards trade overall in the present state of the economy.

THE AUTUMN STEAM GALA OCTOBER 2nd to 5th.

The planning for this is falling into place and the steam locomotive line-up is shaping up as follows:  “West Country” Class locos 34007 “Wadebridge” and 34046 “Braunton” (34046 will be making its national Gala debut), an S160 wartime heavy freight engine, a Great Eastern Railway N7 no 69621 (the first time ever on the Minehead line for either of these types of engine), Somerset and Dorset number 88 and Great Western locomotives 3850, 4160, 5553, 9351 and 9466. The Railway Museums at Blue Anchor, Washford and Bishops Lydeard will be open plus the club room of the Taunton Model Railway Group (the TMRG on the Saturday and Sunday only.)  There will be book signings, various trade stands and other additional attractions, so we expect both the Railway and the area generally to be busy.

 PETE WATERMAN AT MINEHEAD

One of the Gala book signings will be by Pete Waterman who has a new book about his remarkable collection of models published by Ian Allan and titled “A Train Is For Life”. Pete is a long-time supporter of the WSR and he will be signing books in the shop at Minehead on October 4th between 10.00 and 12.00 and 14.00 and 16.00.

THE REAL ALE FESTIVAL.

This will take place on September 13th and 14th and will follow the successful format established over the years. Once again around 100 ales will be on offer with original emphasis placed on the breweries of Somerset. Publicity for the county tends to highlight cider production but it is often overlooked that Somerset is a hot bed of traditional brewing with many of our brewers regularly picking up awards. Likley to be present amongst others are Abbey, Bell, Butcombe, Cheddar, Cotleigh, Cottage, Exmoor, Glastonbury, Milk Street,  Moor, North Curry , Quantock, RCH, Taunton, and Yeovil.  Even they don’t cover the full range of traditional brewing style so some “guests” from other areas will also be available. There will be a limited amount of cider, perry and wine as well. Saturday night entertainment will be from the high-energy folk band Bag O’ Rats and the Sunday lunchtime jazz this year will be from the Tone Valley Jazz Band. The leaflet is now to hand and on the order sheet.

CHRISTMAS SPECIALS

With the leaflets out and about and the details on the website we are getting a steady flow of bookings for Carol Trains, Dunster By Candlelight and the Santa Trains. In fact the December 15th Carol Train from Bishops Lydeard is virtually sold-out already, but these trains are popular and do attract some large block bookings as well.

HESTERCOMBE EXPRESS.

These trains, with the bus link and admission to the Gardens, run to the end of the month of September and have proved a definite success this year.  The inclusive cost is £16.00 for adults and seniors from Minehead, Dunster and Blue Anchor (£5.00 for children), £13.00 from Washford, Watchet, Doniford and Williton (£3.50 for children), £11.00 from Stogumber and Crowcombe Heathfield (£2.50 children) and £6.00 from Bishops Lydeard (children go free).

MORE COMBINED PACKAGES IN THE FUTURE

Inspired by the success of the Hestercombes we are looking at similar things we can do next year. We have two ideas for packages that will start at Minehead and one for a trip originating at the Taunton end of the line. These will be developed as the Autumn progresses and we have a bit more time for planning and discussion.

DUNSTER SHOW.

We once again ran a vintage bus link between Dunster Station and Dunster Country Fair at the end of July and were rewarded with some heavy loadings. We will be doing the same on August 15th for Dunster Show.

RAILWAYS ROUND EXMOOR 2008

As referred to in the last couple of issues of TIC News we have been working to produce a coloured leaflet to promote the three participating railways (the WSR, Lynton and Barnstaple and the Lynton-Lynmouth Cliff Railway) and these are now to hand. We have had 20,000 printed and are distributing them both across the local area and nationally.

MURDER MYSTERY TRAINS

Once again we have made arrangements with “Murder By Appointment” to run four Murder Mystery trains this year.  They will be Midsummer Murder which will run from Minehead on the evening of 28th June, Late Summer Murder from Bishops Lydeard on 6th September (again in the evening), Autumnal Murder Mystery from BL on the evening of 18th October and A Festive Season’s Murder from Bishops Lydeard on 13th December.

FAMILIARISATION VISITS.

If you are interested in a familiarisation visit to the West Somerset Railway to see for yourself what we do and what the experience for passengers is like please contact John Simms on 01643 700382 (e-mail john.com@wsrail.net) and some tickets can be forwarded.  Trips for coach or tour operators who would like to bring party or group travel organisers can be done but obviously have to be fitted-in around our paying passengers – but we will see what we can do if the Railway isn’t likely to be operating at capacity.

2008 SPECIAL EVENTS PROGRAMME.

The following programme will operate in the months to come:-

September 13th and 14th:  CAMRA Real Ale Festival at Minehead.

October 2nd to 5th:- Autumn Steam Gala

October 25th & 26th:- Somerset in Autumn

December 5th & 6th:- Dunster By Candlelight.

December 15th & 16th:- Carol Trains

December 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th, 21st, 23rd, 24th:- Santa Trains

December 29th & 30th Winter Steam Festival.

LOCAL RESIDENTS CARDS.

Since the Railway re-opened in 1976 residents of Taunton Deane and West Somerset Council areas have been able to purchase a Local Residents Travel Card (aka “Star Card”) which gives half-price travel on the normal service trains of the WSR.  The Board has now decided that with effect from January 1st this will be extended to everyone living in an area with a ”TA” postcode.  The Cards are now being sold through a number of Tourist Information Centres and if you are a TIC in the right area and would like to join in please contact Martyn Snell on 01643 700383.

Holiday Highlights

Itinerary

Day 1 – Saturday – London to Dijon

Your holiday begins as you stroll under the magnificent glass roof of London St Pancras and board the morning Eurostar service to Paris. Sit back and relax in your Leisure Select seat and watch the world slip by as you enjoy your complimentary meal and drinks. On arrival in Paris a private transfer will take you across the city to the Gare de Lyon for your First Class TGV to Dijon. Here a private motor coach will take you the short distance to the village of St. Jean de Losne to board Libellule, your hotel barge. Enjoy a champagne welcome, meet the attentive crew and settle in to your comfortable surroundings as you cruise to nearby Seurre. There is time for a lovely pre-dinner stroll around this pleasant town before you head back on board for the first of many delightful meals.

Day 2 – Sunday – Medieval Dijon to Chalon
After breakfast on-board leave the ship for a guided walking tour of this historic capital, famous for its architecture, including the Ducal Palace and the charming medieval quarter with its characteristic half-timbered houses. You have some free time to stroll around the city and wander among the brocanterie (antique shops) or visit the Musée des Beaux Arts before your return to the ship. Libellule casts off during lunch and cruises south through delightful pastoral scenery. Enjoy the relaxing pace of your river cruise as your ship arrives in the late afternoon in Chalon-sur-Saône, birthplace of photography. From the overnight mooring in the heart of the city, close to St. Vincent Cathedral and the medieval quarter, you are ideally placed for a pleasant stroll before or after your four-course dinner.

Day 3 – Monday – Côte de Beaune & the Hospices de Beaune
This morning you head through the rolling hills of Burgundy to the walled town of Beaune. The drive follows the Côte de Beaune, whose villages read like a fine wine list: Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Auxey Duresses, Volnay, Pommard. In the walled town of Beaune, there is the opportunity for a guided visit of the Hospices de Beaune, a charity hospital founded in 1443. A masterpiece of late medieval architecture, it houses priceless art and is topped by a remarkable glazed-tiled roof. Afterwards you have some free time to explore the city before returning to Chalon for lunch on board and perhaps an afternoon stroll. You re-join the river Saône to cruise to historic Tournus, with its wealth of old buildings, alleyways and antique shops, home to the Abbey of St. Philibert, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture.

Day 4 – Tuesday – Medieval Villages of Burgundy
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, before visiting the timeless village of Brancion, perched on a hilltop and the Château de Cormatin, undoubtedly one of the most sumptuous châteaux in Burgundy with a charming Renaissance garden. Lunch is served on-board amidst the pretty setting of Tournus, where you have time to explore the little squares surrounding the abbey full of arts and crafts shops, a chocolatier and local cheese emporium. Back underway, your cruise heads past verdant pastures populated with the famed white Charolais cattle that are native to this area. A mid-afternoon mooring in Mâcon leaves you plenty of time for exploring on foot or by bicycle before dinner.

Day 5 – Wednesday – The Beaujolais Hills
This morning you head for the Beaujolais hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Grapes for the exclusive wines grow in the northern hills, where limestone deposits give the wines extraordinary quality and body. You can enjoy a private tasting at one of the famous vineyards before returning to Mâcon for lunch. This afternoon your floating hotel cruises past sleepy villages before anchoring in picturesque Trévoux, an attractive, partially fortified town and former capital of the local Dombes principality.

Day 6 – Thursday – Cruise to Lyon
There is time this morning to stroll around the charming town of Trévoux before cruising into the chic northern suburbs of Lyon, the culinary capital of France. Enjoy the contrast with the sleepy towns as you arrive in France’s second city. Entry into the city by river affords unique views, including elegant river front homes and the city’s oldest quarter. A guided walking tour of the Old Town, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will reveal its narrow cobbled streets and trademark traboules, alleyways used by silk workers and, later on, the Resistance during World War II. There is free time for you to further explore Lyon, perhaps visit the huge 16th-century Gothic cathedral and astrological clock on Place St. Jean or take the funicular to the landmark Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, topped by twin turrets. On your return to Libellule take your seat for a gala farewell dinner surrounded by the lights and sights of Lyon.

Day 7 – Friday – By train to London
After breakfast say farewell to charming Libellule as you transfer to Lyon Part-Dieu station and join the TGV travelling First Class to Lille Europe. Here you change trains and board the Eurostar service. The pace has quickened, yet the memories remain to savour over your complimentary meal and drinks, and beyond, as you return to London St. Pancras.

Libellule

The intimate hotel-barge Libellule (dragonfly) has just 10 cabins, situated on the lower and upper deck. All cabins have a private shower, WC and washbasin. Facilities on-board include a lounge, bar, dining area and sundeck. The ship is fully air-conditioned and centrally heated throughout. Classically trained French chefs prepare the on-board cuisine using the finest local produce to serve you regional specialities to rival the best local restaurants. Each day you will be treated to a buffet breakfast, full luncheon or buffet lunch and four-course gastronomic dinners. The ship is proud to offer a careful selection of delightful regional wines to accompany lunch and dinner, which are included in the price of your cruise.
