============================================================================================================= SILVER LINING FOR THOSE IN FEAR OF REDUNDANCY How a new travel policy could put the shine back into your summer holiday
Some brighter news for once for those facing the threat of redundancy: it need not jeopardise their holiday plans.
Insurance provider, AllClear, (Tel: 0845 250 5200 & quote REP) has added ‘redundancy cash-back cover’ to its AllClear Personal single-trip travel policy over the summer. Not only does its policy already insure against the forced cancellation of a holiday through redundancy, but now it goes one better: for those who decide NOT to cancel, AllClear will contribute 50% to the cost of the trip.
“Being made redundant is bad enough,” says AllClear’s Iain Sykes, “but it is doubly so when that means having to cancel a well-earned break. Our policy gives them an alternative. If they have an AllClear policy, and still want to go, then we will pay 50% of their booked holiday costs.”
The new policy has a limit of up to £800 per (insured) person, (£500 for holidays within Europe). If a family of two adults and two children book a typical £3,000 holiday and decide to take that holiday despite being made redundant, AllClear will give them £1,500 cash back.
“In short the policyholder wins either way,” Iain adds. “He’s covered if he cancels, or he receives a welcome cash sum to spend if he doesn’t. At last, he has a choice, a parachute that allows a softer landing, and takes some of the edge off what is always a difficult time.”
The redundancy cash-back cover is included in the AllClear Personal travel policy for any traveller under 65 who is made redundant, assuming they have more than two years continuous service with the same employer, and work at least 16-hours per week. This year, Britons are expected to make over 40 million holiday trips abroad; according to the National Office of Statistics, even in benign conditions approximately 2,000 people are made redundant EVERY WORKING DAY.
“It is not being alarmist,” Iain insists, “it is just a fact of life, and a clear gap in the market. If we can make things better for people, and enhance our product offering, then everybody wins: AllClear, the consumer, and the travel industry at large.”
Over the years, AllClear has been responsible for many innovations in the travel insurance industry, and was a pioneer in the high-risk field of covering travellers with severe pre-existing medical conditions AllClear Insurance Services, AllClear House, 1 Redwing Court, Ashton Road, Romford, Essex, RM3 8QQ Tel: 0845 250 5200 & quote REP www.allcleartravel.co.uk

Holiday Apartment in Grange-over-Sands
Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria (or Lancashire North of the Sands if you’re old fashioned)
Grange-over-Sands is one of Britain’s most delightful, unspoilt small resorts. It exudes Victorian charm and is a gentle sort of place. It’s less than half an hour’s drive from Lake Windermere but light years away from the crowds and bustle. South Lakeland has so many hidden delights and Grange is the ideal place from whence to explore them. Grange is easily accessible by rail, with frequent services from Lancaster (connecting with London and Glasgow services) as well as through trains from Manchester Airport. I offer a 10% discount to members of REPTA and TSSA.
Belle Isle Terrace
The apartment is on Belle Isle Terrace, next to the Victoria Hall (regular concerts in summer) and the Tourist Information Centre. It’s in the heart of Grange, five minutes walk from the station with shops, park and cafes nearby. The apartment is on the third floor of the fine Victorian terrace, and gives superb views across Morecambe Bay and towards the Bowland Fells. Behind the house is woodland.
The Apartment
The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with a lounge, double bedroom, study and kitchen. There is also a utility room with hoover, ironing board etc. Heating is gas central heating supplemented by a coal-effect gas fire in the lounge. Even on cold winter days the place warms up very quickly. The flat is full of books – novels, history, Lakes, railways. Guests are welcome to read them during their stay, and use the CD and video collection. There is the usual stuff: TV, DVD, video, washing machine, gas cooker. A bike is kept in the flat and is available for guests to use.
Walking and Cycling
Grange is a great centre for both walking and cycling. There are dozens of lovely walks that can be done from the flat, especially up to Hampsfell behind Grange. There are many safe cycling routes, around Meathop, Witherslack and the Lyth and Winster Valleys. An evening or morning walk along the Promenade is always a treat, with superb floral displays all along. If you take the train across the estuary there are superb walks in the Arnside and Silverdale AONB as well as Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve.
Eating Out
In Grange itself there are several very good cafes, including the famous Hazelmere, near the station. The Promenade Café, open from Easter, is a classic. For evenings out there are several restaurants, including those in private hotels which often have space for non-residents. Clare House and Hampsfell House are favourites. The local chippy – Fish over Chips on Kentsbank Road - is very good and you can eat in.
Keeping Grange Special
Grange has several distinctive shops – an award-winning butchers (Higginsons), two excellent second-hand bookshops, a very good deli, two bakeries, a greengrocer’s and lots more good places.
Public Facilities
The Library is very good and staff are always helpful – as is the Tourist Information Centre, less than a minute from the flat. The station staff are very obliging and will offer advice on days out and ‘rover’ tickets which can be used on train, bus and lake steamer. There are weekly band concerts in the park during the season, and the ducks give all-year entertainment in the lovely park near the station. For a place of its size Grange has a good range of cultural activities, with concerts in the Victoria Hall as well as in Ulverston and Cartmel Priory.
Nearby
There is so much beauty within a ten mile radius of Grange. Although Lake Windermere and Coniston are very near, there are some really outstanding places, off the main tourist maps, which are worth visiting – Arnside and Silverdale have lovely walks and are charming villages, easily reached by the local train service. Holker Hall is very near, with superb gardens and an excellent farm shop. So too Sizergh Castle. Ulverston is a short train ride away – it’s a lively market town with a very active arts scene. Kendal is half an hour on the X35 bus, which is hourly. Cartmel is one of Cumbria’s loveliest villages with its magnificent priory. A superb walk over the Fell, or you can take the local bus. The Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway is very near and is served by the X35 bus. Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve is a 10 minute train ride away, at Silverdale. For longer trips a train ride up the coast beyond Barrow to St Bees, Ravenglass and Whitehaven is recommended.
Practicalities
The apartment is available throughout the year. I use it as a bolt-hole from the demands of helping to run a train service (I’m a senior manager with Northern Rail) so there’s a lot of my stuff there – books, music, maps – which guests are welcome to use. This is the first year of opening it to ‘paying guests’ and I’m learning as I go along – but I would like to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable!
There is one car parking space for guests.
The apartment letting is Saturday to Saturday. At this stage I’d prefer it if you brought your own linen and towels, otherwise there is everything you need.
Prices
My pricing structure for 2010 is very simple: per week Jan 2nd to March 27th £250 Mar 27th to April 17th £350 April 17th to July 3rd £300 July 3rd to Sept 11 £350 Sept11th – Nov 6th £300 Nov 6th to Dec 11th £250 Dec 11th to Jan 8th £350
Guests who are members of REPTA get a 10% discount.
If the flat is available I can do weekend rates – by arrangement
All bookings should be accompanied with a deposit of 50% of the total price, and full payment is required two weeks before the start of your holiday.
If you would like to make a booking, or enquire about the flat, please email me on paul.salveson@btconnect.com or phone me on 01484 844846 or write to me at: 90a Radcliffe Road, Golcar, Huddersfield HD7 4EZ
Thanks!

Discover the glories of Railway Walks With Julia Bradbury
FOLLOWING the phenomenal success of Wainwright Walks, Acorn Media is delighted to announce the return of Julia Bradbury (Watchdog, The Rough Guide To…) who once again dons her walking boots to explore railway lines, many of which have become the legacy of ‘The Beeching Axe’.
Featuring The Monsal Trail, The Mawddach Trail, Cornwall’s Mineral Tramways, The Strathspey Railway, The Rodwell Trail & Portland, and Callender to Loch Tay, the series – which is currently being broadcast on BBC Four and receiving unprecedented viewing figures – provides hours of beautiful walks steeped in history and offers a fascinating and in-depth insight into industrial Britain.
In the 1960s thousands of railways across the country were closed. Many of these old branch lines, and the spectacular scenery they pass through, are now treasured by ramblers. Julia follows these old tracks, overgrown cuttings and ancient viaducts of Britain’s lost rail empire, as well as visiting the disused lines across England, Scotland and Wales, through stunning landscapes, urban backstreets, with each contrasting walk having a unique story to tell.
A tremendously interesting and unique exploration into Britain’s industrial history, the DVD of Railway Walks with Julia Bradbury was released courtesy of Acorn Media on 12 January 2009.
Interviews available with Julia Bradbury please contact Sazzie Kluvitse to discuss
